Docking is the process of merging two protocols — for example from Ethereum Execution Layer to Ethereum Consensus Layer (formerly Ethereum 1.0 to Ethereum 2.0) — to become better and stronger over time. The docking process generally involves the transfer of data and information from the older and less technologically advanced protocol to the newer and more state-of-the-art version. Docking is a very complex process and can take weeks (or longer) to complete because of the steps associated with sharing similar data types between network infrastructures that are often very different from one another.
