What is Java Virtual Machine (JVM)?

A type of virtual machine (VM), the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) converts Java programming language bytecode files into machine code so they can be processed by the operating system (OS). The JVM's primary functions are to manage program memory and allow Java programs to run on any device or OS. An integral part of Java programs, the JVM works in conjunction with the Java Development Kit (JDK), which is the development platform, and the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which executes and runs the program.
