Non-leaf nodes are found in the body of a Merkle tree. They are located above the leaf-node layer (which is at the bottom of a Merkle tree) and below the Merkle root (found at the top of a Merkle tree). Through hashing functions, these nodes connect the leaf nodes and the Merkle root of a Merkle tree.
