A recovery share is a security mechanism that allows a user to designate how many shares are created, and what percentage are required to regenerate a wallet and its public and private keys. For example, a user could potentially designate a 5-of-7 share threshold to determine the number of recovery shares needed to recover their wallet. Compared to a solitary recovery phrase, the recovery shares mechanism makes theft more difficult. However, it makes the wallet regeneration process slightly more complicated.
