In computing, a text-based user interface (TUI) is a user interface (UI) that makes use of text characters, symbols, and colors while running in a character-based terminal. TUIs were developed as an early form of human-computer interaction before the widespread development of graphical user interfaces (GUIs). Similarly to GUIs, TUI interfaces often use an entire screen and accept mouse, keyboard, and other computational input types. Disk Operating System, or DOS, which was initially released in 1981, was one of many early text-based UIs released in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
