Businesses throughout Germany have become increasingly pessimistic about the economic outlook for the next six months.
The latest data from the German IFO Business Climate Index reveals a decline in economic sentiment among entrepreneurs regarding the current business situation, dropping from 87.2 in November to 86.4 in December. This unexpected decrease contrasts with market expectations of a slight improvement to 87.8.
The figures indicate a change of -0.92% compared to the previous month and a more significant decline of -2.81% compared to the same period last year. The survey, which encompasses the opinions of 9,000 firms across various sectors such as manufacturing, services, trade, and construction, measures entrepreneurs' sentiments about the current business situation and their expectations for the next six months. The scale ranges from -100, representing expectations of a deteriorating economy, to 100, representing a sense of improvement.
These findings suggest that a swift recovery in the near future remains elusive as 2023 comes to a close. The German economy has faced ongoing challenges throughout the year, as indicated by the economic surveillance of #EU economies.
