Solo mining is where you mine crypto on your own directly on the Proof-of-Work (PoW) blockchain you are mining on. While you don't have to pay any fees to solo mine and get to keep the entire block reward, it also can make block rewards infrequent, sporadic, or very unlikely. For this reason, solo mining is largely a thing of the past for most large mineable blockchains. Most crypto miners join mining pools that pool their hash rate and distribute block rewards to pool participants based on the hash rate they contribute to the pool.
