Australia's National Anti-Corruption Commission has alleged that federal law enforcement officer William Wheatley misappropriated 81.62 BTC from the #Trezor wallet. This information was disclosed by local media sources.
As per reporters, in January 2019, Australian authorities executed a search operation for narcotics in a residence located in Hopper's Crossing. During the search, a Trezor hardware wallet was discovered, but law enforcement officials delayed obtaining legal approval to unlock it for approximately three weeks.
Subsequently, upon unlocking the wallet, no bitcoins were located inside, as officer William Wheatley purportedly transferred all funds to the #Binance cryptocurrency platform four days post the search.
The publication indicated that the hardware wallet held 81.62 #BTC, valued at $309,000 during the search, but currently estimated at around $4.2 million.
On February 16, 2024, Wheatley made a court appearance but refrained from admitting guilt.
