Famous billionaire Ilon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, accusing them of unfair business practices, breach of fiduciary duty and failure to comply with contract terms.
In court documents, Ilon Musk claims that OpenAI has effectively become a subsidiary of #Microsoft, one of the world's leading high-tech companies. The lawsuit claims that under new leadership, OpenAI is not only creating but also improving general artificial intelligence (AGI) for commercial purposes, rather than prioritizing the welfare of humanity.
Musk is asking the court to prohibit Open AI, Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman from profiting from AGI, specifically #ChatGPT-4.
The lawsuit emphasizes that previous versions of the product were available open source. Mr. Musk claims that the move away from this approach was driven more by profit considerations than concern for the welfare of the community.
The lawsuit emphasizes that GPT-4 goes against the essence of the "open AI" ideology and that the source code is restricted for obvious reasons. According to the document, Microsoft's main goal was to profit from GPT-4, which would not have been possible if OpenAI had stuck to its original principles.
The dispute centers around the underlying agreement, according to Musk. Notably, Musk has previously criticized OpenAI for deviating from its original non-profit statements.
A prominent figure in the tech industry and the man behind social platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk invested $50 million in the venture in its early days. He claims that OpenAI owes much of its existence to his funding.
After launching ChatGPT in February 2023, Musk revealed plans to develop a competing solution, which was announced in the fall of that year.
Currently, #OpenAI is refraining from making official statements regarding ongoing legal issues.
