Lawyers representing FTX's Sam Bankman Freed (SBF) expressed their disagreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office's position regarding their client's proposed 50-year sentence.
According to a Bloomberg report, they argue that such a requirement "distorts reality and makes him look like a villain of epic proportions."
In March 2024, the prosecution demanded 40 to 50 years in prison for Bankman Fried. The prosecution argued that such a harsh sentence was warranted because SBF's actions allegedly led to the collapse of the #exchange, resulting in more than $10 million in losses.
Prosecutors characterized Bunkman-Fried as a man driven by insatiable greed and guided by pernicious megalomania, personal ethics and a sense of superiority in breaking the law.
The #FTX founder could face up to 115 years in prison under the combined charges brought by the U.S. Department of Justice. However, the prosecution has recently been pushing for a sentence of 40-50 years in prison.
SBF attorneys have opposed the government's position, calling the allegation disturbing and inaccurate:
"The memorandum distorts reality with obvious hostility and portrays Sam as a malevolent figure. It attributes sinister and intrusive intentions to him and reflects an archaic view of punishment. Such a portrayal is unfounded."
In November 2023, Sam Bankman-Fried was found guilty of multiple charges including fraud, misrepresentation of assets and #money laundering during his tenure as CEO of FTX.
Final sentencing is scheduled for March 28, 2024. Some analysts suggest that even under the most favorable of circumstances, the former FTX CEO could face decades in prison.
