GameStop Corp., a prominent gaming company, has announced the official closure of its NFT marketplace on February 2, 2024. The decision to discontinue the site stems from the prevailing regulatory ambiguity surrounding digital currencies.
Back in August 2022, the renowned U.S. video game retailer introduced its NFT marketplace, which focused on gaming projects developed in collaboration with the #ImmutableX blockchain. However, GameStop had already ceased its support for the cryptocurrency wallet, and in November 2023, the app was removed from both Apple and Google's online stores. The closure of the #NFT marketplace can also be attributed to the regulatory uncertainty surrounding digital assets.
During the peak of the cryptozyme, GameStop encountered substantial financial losses, amounting to millions of dollars. These losses compelled the retailer to withdraw its investments from the industry. According to the company's Q3 2022 financial report, GameStop incurred a staggering $95 million loss.
As of now, #GameStop representatives have refrained from commenting on the termination of the marketplace.
It is worth noting that the social network X has also discontinued its support for stylized #NFT avatars.
